This study investigates the critical condition of the historical architectural heritage in Gharian City, which represents a vital cultural and civilizational legacy spanning various historical epochs. Gharian is home to a diverse array of historically significant structures, including former governmental buildings (such as Gharian Palace, Ghrisyani Palace, and Qaim Al-Maqam House), infrastructural facilities (like the old Post Office), heritage settlements (Al-Masoufin Village and Housh Al-Hafr), and religious edifices (old mosques and zawiyas). The core problem addressed is that these valuable landmarks are currently facing severe physical deterioration and neglect from responsible governmental authorities, placing their very existence under threat—a state summarized as being 'between historical memory and an unknown future.' The research stresses the urgent need for comprehensive maintenance, professional restoration, and systematic preservation of these assets. Furthermore, it advocates for their sustainable economic utilization through strategic development, such as converting suitable buildings into museums, establishing cultural documentation centers, and promoting specialized heritage tourism. This call to action is significantly underscored by the existence of numerous local and international legal instruments and agreements that explicitly mandate the protection, conservation, and revival of such invaluable urban heritage sites.
