The Contextual Significance of the Verb (Akhadha) in the Holy Qur'an

Abstract

The research attempted to determine the semantic significance of the frequentative verb "Akhadha" (أخذ) within the context of the Holy Qur'an, focusing on its varied uses and nuanced meanings across the sacred text. The study revealed that while the verb's core, original meaning remains evident in many Qur'anic contexts, it simultaneously takes on several secondary meanings. These auxiliary significations are often linked to specific rhetorical purposes and serve to expand the verb's overall semantic scope far beyond its lexical root, including concepts such as punishment, sealing, and coercion. Critically, the research emphasizes the indispensable role of the surrounding linguistic and situational context in resolving semantic ambiguity. The context acts as the definitive determinant, particularly where a literal interpretation might be misleading, thereby removing any confusion and precisely specifying the intended meaning of the verb "Akhadha" in each unique Qur'anic instance.
