The Transformation of Libyan Family Functions: A Descriptive and Analytical Sociological Study

Abstract

The Libyan society has undergone profound transformations in recent decades, significantly impacting various social systems, most notably the Libyan family as a primary social institution. This study aims to analyze the manifestations of change in the functions of the Libyan family from a sociological perspective, following its evolution from a traditional extended structure to a modern nuclear form. Utilizing a descriptive-analytical approach, the research monitors changes in biological, economic, educational, and social functions. The findings indicate that while the family was once a self-sufficient unit performing all vital roles, the emergence of specialized state institutions has led to a contraction of these functions. Despite these shifts, the biological function remains a fundamental pillar for the continuity of the human species. Furthermore, the study highlights that the Libyan family has transitioned from a production unit to a consumption unit, influenced by oil revenues and modernization. The results also emphasize the impact of women's education and their entry into the labor market on reshaping family dynamics and social roles. Ultimately, the study concludes that despite the rapid social changes, the contemporary Libyan family maintains its distinct cultural identity and remains a vital refuge for individuals, grounded in Islamic values and social solidarity.
