يُعدّ التبديل اللغوي وخلط اللغات ظاهرتين شائعتين في المجتمعات ثنائية اللغة، حيث يتبادل المتحدثون اللغات داخل الجمل وعبرها. تدرس هذه الدراسة التعريفات والنماذج النظرية والأنماط التجريبية للتبديل اللغوي بين ثنائيي اللغة الإنجليزية ولغات أخرى. وقد حُللت بيانات من المحادثات الطبيعية، ووسائل التواصل الاجتماعي، والتفاعلات الصفية (مثل السياقات الإنجليزية-الإسبانية، والإنجليزية-الأردية، والإنجليزية-العربية). وحددنا أنواع التبديل بين الجمل، وداخل الجمل، والوسوم، وحددنا تواترها في مختلف السياقات. توضح الأشكال توزيع المتحدثين ثنائيي اللغة وأمثلة على استخدام اللغات المختلطة. تُظهر النتائج أن التبديل بين الجمل غالبًا ما يكون سائدًا في الكلام العامي، بينما يُشير الاختلاط داخل الجمل إلى إتقان أعلى للغة ثنائية اللغة. تؤثر العوامل الاجتماعية (العمر، والبيئة، وعلاقة المتحدث) على أنماط التبديل اللغوي. تتوافق النتائج مع وظائف غومبيرز التفاعلية ونموذج مايرز-سكوتون لاختيار اللغة. تساهم هذه الدراسة في فهم كيفية عمل التبديل اللغوي كاستراتيجية تواصل لدى الناطقين باللغة الإنجليزية ثنائيي اللغة.
